    ​Is it important to follow up after the interview?

    Does it make any differences?

    The answer is yes, however, there are both appropriate ways and inappropriate ways for a candidate to follow up after an interview.

    Firstly, if possible, do not forget to collect all the interviewers’ business cards during the interview. It is an efficient tool that will help you have all the employees’ contact information and create connections. Also, before leaving the interview room, it is a great idea to ask the interviewer to get the information about their timeframe for deciding on a candidate. That way, you will know when is the proper time to follow up after the interview.

    Besides, regardless of whether you end up offering the job or not, you are able to build a long-term professional relationship with that person. Therefore, it is considerably appropriate to connect them on LinkedIn after the interview.

    It is clear that following up after the interview can make the employers want to hire you. In addition, there are four main appropriate ways to follow-up after the interview

    • Write the first interview follow-up email within 24 hours after the interview.
    • Send a separate thank-you note, personalized email to everyone you have interviewed with.
    • Write a second follow-up email to ask for an update if you do not get any response after the established deadline. Also, follow-up sooner if you have received another offer that you are not planning to accept.
    • Build a potential long-term professional relationship with the company since it is realizable that networking is important.

    For the first interview, make sure you follow-up the email. It is good to express your appreciation and support your interest in the position. Also, you could show your commitment in the email by pointing out to the company plans that you have discussed during the interview. Moreover, you are able to present your experiences and skills that can fulfill their prospective challenges. In the end,you should confirm with them about their timeline for a final decision and also state that you are willing to provide the hiring manager with any additional information to support the company decision-making process.

    Here is an example of a follow-up email right after the interview:

    Subject line: Appreciate your time and advice.

    Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

    My name is [Your Name], I would like to thank you for taking the time to talk to me about the position of [the position name] this morning at the recruiting event. It was a pleasure to know more about your core values and industry insights.

    After discussing in detail about the position, I believe that this job I would really enjoy and could utilise my skills and experiences [indicate to your specific area of expertise]. that could be contributed with your company prospective goal.

    Finally, I’ve attached my resume for reference and a few of the projects I mentioned to you as well. Please let me know if there’s anything else you need on my end. Please feel free to contact me if you find you need any more information. I look forward to our call next week as discussed.

    Thank you, [Hiring Manager’s Name].

    Best regards,

    [Your Name]

    Here is an example of a second follow-up email:

    Hi [Hiring Manager’s Name],

    I hope you’re having a great week. I interviewed for the [job title] position on [interview date], and you mentioned your team would be finishing up interviews and making a final hiring decision this week.

    Would you be able to provide me with an update, please? and if there are any additional details I could provide you with to facilitate the hiring process, please let me know!

    Thank you so much.

    Best regards,

    [Your Name]
