It won’t come as any surprise that finding a new job can be stressful. As a potential candidate you are putting yourself on the line to be judged as suitable and ready for a step up on the career ladder. Recruiters are there to take some of the pressure off. But because we get so many applications a day, it’s important that you follow some basic rules to make sure you stand out.
As simple as it sounds, you would be amazed at the number of CVs we get sent that are missing out even basic contact details. Recruiters search for candidates across a variety of channels. If we come across your profile we need to be able to get in touch with you, no matter where we find you. If recruiters can’t reach you, you may miss out on a great opportunity. At the very least provide your phone number and email address to your CV and online profiles. It‘s also useful to include basic info such as your birthday and marital status. This will save you time in the long run as we won’t have to discuss it with you during the application process.
If you’re an active job seeker, then it makes sense to reach out to a recruiter and send them your CV right? If nobody knows you are looking, you will never be in the running for potential job vacancies. You can submit your CV to most recruitment companies via their website (you can drop yours to us here). If you want to be really smart, reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn and connect with them. Strike up a conversation and let them know you are available for consideration.
Like we mentioned earlier, you have to be reachable if you are actively searching for a job. Even if you’re not actively hunting, you should always make it as easy as possible for recruiters to find you online. You never know what opportunities are out there! Keeping your LinkedIn profile updated is an effective and easy way of doing this. You could be our perfect candidate but we’ll never know unless we can find you.
Sometimes a job opportunity just isn’t right for you. That’s ok! Tell the recruiter, they won’t be offended. It will save you time in the long run if you’re up-front and honest from the start. Also, let us know immediately if you’ve already been approached by another recruiter for the same job. This seems an obvious point to mention but you’d be amazed at how often people fail to do this. This kind of behavior may come across as unprofessional and could prevent us from approaching you for opportunities in future.
After you are on a recruiter’s radar and a suitable position opens up, part of our job is to give you a call for a quick interview. This is called the ‘screening process’ and helps us determine whether to move you forward in the application process. This is your first opportunity to shine. Make an effort during your screening calls with recruiters and consider it a ‘mini’ interview. Impress us here and we will be singing your praises when we put your name forward to employers.
It’s always a good idea to keep in touch with your recruiter during the recruitment process. It’s part of our job to follow up with you after an interview to see how it went. We’ll usually give you a quick call afterwards to de-brief and get your feedback. Understanding what you liked and disliked about the interview will help us match you with more suitable positions in future.
Following these simple tips will bring you one step closer to exploring what career prospects exist for you in the market. Reach out to us or make yourself visible so that we can find you ourselves. Making small changes to the way you interact with recruiters will really make you shine. It’s all about getting yourself out there and learning how to work together with your recruiter.
